the war on gentrification
May. 21st, 2007 10:23 pmToday I watched an eighty year old woman in a wheelchair get carded for cigarettes. It's store policy at the IGA to ask everyone who buys cigarettes for ID. As best I can tell this policy exists to protect the store from homeless/poor bottle-collectors, many of whom probably don't have a valid ID at all. Same goes for the 'maximum 24 cans' return policy. I have sympathy for the people who work there, not wanting to have to deal with some of these people, and on the other hand it makes me want to barf. Their prices are also ridiculous. I look forward to moving somewhere else and never shopping at an IGA ever again.
On the way back, someone was walking their cat on a leash outside my building. The cat did not seem interested in walking anywhere, and preferred to huddle in the doorway.
